Functions of the Liver

The liver is one of the most important organs in the human body. Without the liver, one cannot survive. It plays a vital role keeping the immune system strong and also aids in digestion.

We need the liver to function well in order to be healthy.

  • It is responsible for over 500 different tasks.

The liver is a reddish-brown organ that can be found at the upper right part of your abdomen.


The liver performs so many functions that helps the human body to survive. As said earlier, it is known to play over 500 roles in the body. Some of the functions include:

  • Production of bile: Bile produced is used to break down lipids during digestion.
  • It helps during blood clot.
  • It is also a place to store some vitamins in the body.
  • This organ also helps the body break down protein during digestion.
  • It filters and removes compounds from the body, including hormones, such as estrogen and aldosterone, and other toxic substances in the body. This includes alcohol and other drugs.
  • This organ also helps to store extra sugar found in the body as glycogen.
  • It also helps break down damaged blood cells in the body.

These are just some few functions the liver performs in aiding digestion. Its most important role is to keep the immune system strong enough to fight other infections.


There are many diseases that can affect the liver. This could either be gradual or rapid. These are:

  • Cirrhosis: This is the condition whereby the liver does not function properly as it used to be over time. This is as a result of it failing to replace damaged tissues with normal ones.
  • Hepatitis B: This is an infection caused by the Hepatitis B Virus that affects the largest organ in the human body, the liver.
  • Hepatitis A: Just as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A also has the same effects.
  • Liver cancer
  • Gallstone
  • Ascites

When ones liver is failing, there are some signs and symptoms the person can experience. These are

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Always looking sad
  • Itchy skin
  • Stomach pain
