How to Prevent Stroke
There are easy ways to prevent stroke and live healthily. Stroke can cause a lot to your body. You can start to protect yourself and avoid stroke.
What is stroke?
Stroke is a brain attack, which occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is reduced or interrupted. When this happens, the brain cells are deprived oxygen and they begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.
Risk Factors of Stroke
Certain traits, conditions, and habits can raise your risk of having a stroke. These traits, conditions, and habits are known as risk factors.
The more risk factors you have, the more likely you are to have a stroke. You can treat or control some risk factors, such as high blood pressure and smoking. Other risk factors, such as age and gender, you can’t control.
These risk factors include:
- Smoking – Smoking can do a lot of harm to the body. It destroys the blood vessels and prevent oxygen from reaching the brain.This can lead to high blood pressure and other diseases in the body.
- Diabetes – Diabetes is a disease in which the blood sugar level is high because the body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use its insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps move blood sugar into cells where it’s used for energy.
- Age – Stroke occurs in all age groups. Studies show the risk of stroke doubles for each decade between the ages of 55 and 85. But strokes also can occur in childhood or adolescence. Although stroke is often considered a disease of aging, the risk of stroke in childhood is actually highest during the perinatal period, which encompasses the last few months of fetal life and the first few weeks after birth.
- Gender – Observations show that, men are more likely to have stroke than women. Although, young middle aged men are more likely to have stroke, they have a higher chance of survival than women do. This is because, women might have it at the later part of their lives and this makes it difficult to survive.
- Race – For African Americans, stroke is more common and more deadly—even in young and middle-aged adults—than for any ethnic or other racial group in the United States.
- Family History – High blood pressure, diabetes and stroke are diseases that seem to run in families. If your family has any history of these, you are at higher risk of getting it. High blood pressure and diabetes can all lead to stroke.
- Heart Diseases – Heart diseases can cause blood clots in the veins that can lead to stroke.
Ways to prevent stroke
Exercise contributes to losing weight and lowering blood pressure, but it also stands on its own as an independent stroke reducer. Not necessarily the hard way. Take a walk around your neighborhood every morning after breakfast, start a fitness club with friends. This will help in blood circulation to all parts of the body and the brain.
- Avoid Smoking and Alcoholism.
In order to prevent stroke, it is best to stay away from smoking and drinking too much alcohol. You can have a glass on few occasions but it shouldn’t be a habit. Alcohol and tobacco damages the cells in the body. This can lead to many diseases including stroke.
- Lose Some Weight.
Stroke can easily affect people who are obese or overweight. Blood vessels can be blocked by fat and prevent circulation of blood to other parts of the body or the brain. Losing some few weight can help prevent you from getting stroke.
- Treat Diabetes
Having high blood sugar damages blood vessels over time, making clots more likely to form inside them. It is very important to keep your blood sugar level under control.
- Eat Healthy Diet.
A healthy diet keeps the body healthy. Having a healthy and a balanced diet can help keep your sugar level normal. This can also help prevent stroke since high blood pressure is one of the main causes of stroke.
- Treat atrial fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is a form of irregular heartbeat that causes clots to form in the heart. Those clots can then travel to the brain, producing a stroke. If you have atrial fibrillation, get it treated.
