Stretch Marks: Causes and how to get rid of them

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are a form of scarring on the skin with an off-color hue. These grooves or lines on your skin are not harmful to your health. But it just doesn’t look good on the body sometimes. Both men and women can get stretch marks. They appear when there is any rapid changes in the body, when you lose weight or gain weight.

What causes stretch marks

These marks happen when your body grows quickly for any reason. It might be because you are putting on some weight or you just lost some few pounds and your skin cant stretch enough to keep up. This causes long, thin, rippled marks called stria.

During pregnancy, these thin lines occur on the abdominal area of women, due to the rapid expansion of the womb. This also happens due to the weight gained during pregnancy. Most women, about 90% experience this when they are pregnant.

People who take steroids are at risk of getting stretch marks on their body. Those who use cortisone cream or take steroid pills are at a risk of developing thin marks on their body. This is because steroids break down the skin’s connective tissues. This decreases the skin’s ability to stretch when there is growth.

During puberty, there is development in the body of both boys and girls. The rapid change in their body can result in Striae.
